Why You Shouldn’t Aim To Make The World Fair
“Life is not fair; get used to it.” — Bill Gates
In an era that mandates people check their privilege at the door. It’s essential to be aware not only of the privilege that others possess but also have self-aware concerning your own privilege.
But where is the line between meritocracy and nepotism? I thought in the midst of a passionate debate with my sister. Is preferential treatment always based on nepotism and/or one’s net worth?
To her, as a fourth-year medical student having seen the health disparities that persist between the have’s and have not’s it seemed like that was the case. One afternoon during her daily rounds, she was tasked with seeing a patient in an area of the hospital that she had not yet been privy to.
After spending 10 minutes searching for this mystery floor, she finally asked for some guidance and was directed to a back hallway which led to a back elevator which brought her to what appeared to be a hotel lobby.
To her surprise, this was no hotel, but rather for lack of better words, it was the V.I.P. section of the hospital. Where patients who are often referred to as “pavilion patients,” stay.
