In the New York Times best-selling memoir Shoe Dog, Phil Knight reflects on his Oregon University Track & Field experience, commemorating his former coach and business partner Bowerman.

The Bowerman story I enjoyed most was how he reminded his athletes that they were descendants of those remaining of the famous Oregon Trail.

The Oregon Trail was a 2,000-mile route across rugged terrain, that hundreds of thousands of American pioneers in the mid-1800s used to emigrate west. The five to six-month journey killed one in ten, most dying of diseases, accidents, and exhaustion.

The above Phil Knight quote encompasses wisdom that goes far beyond traveling west on the Oregon Trail. It embodies the essence of doing something outside of your comfort zone. Personally, my decision to write an article a day during the month of July was one of…
